I am making some butternut and buttercup squash for supper.. I'll post a pic in the foodie thread of it tonight or tomorrow. But I kept some of the seeds of each to plant next year. They are from a grocery store but grown locally.

Has anyone had experience growing these squash from grocery store seeds? I'm wondering if it's a gamble of what they might be crossed with and

I should just buy the seeds, or if these will be good?

Commercial growers rarely use mixed seeds. They grow only what they know will produce the most. Having different varieties of squash in the same field would be very unusual so I am sure that the seeds will not be contaminated. I would worry more about the seeds not being fully mature than I would be about cross pollination.

We did this for 4-5 years in Italy, seeds from a UK supermarket  had superb results.

I'm letting them sit out for a week to dry then I'll put a few of each in a damp paper towel to see if they sprout. If they do I'll plant them in the spring.
