I inherited my mother's spider plant several months back. Suddenly in the last month the leaves started to brown from the core of the plant. The tips of the leaves were still green but the part of leaves attached to the plant were brown. I really want to revive it so I chose to repot it as it hasn't been done in years. The roots are still very healthy although root bound. Does anyone know what have cause this so it doesn't happen again? I realized it was close to an air vent and since its winter it may have been getting hit with warm air.

Hey Sammy,

How long has it been having trouble?
And did you move it away from the vent?

Could be a few things:
Too much water
Not enough water
Sunlight

Spider plants are very hearty. The only times I’ve had trouble with mine is over watering and not enough sunlight. They do like bright, indirect or filtered sunlight. Mine is on a drafty window cill (that gets about 4 hours of filtered sun and all day indirect sun) and temperature doesn’t seem to affect it too much (within reason).

This time of year you want to let the soil dry out before watering again. I generally water once every two to two and a half weeks in the winter and once a week to every three of four days in the summer (if it needs it). I let the top soul completely dry out to about an inch to an inch and a half.

Hope this helps :).
Keep be posted .

Thanks Heather!

I ended up doing a huge makeover. Pulled off all dead or dying leaves and repotted. I'm guessing my mum never repotted this guy in about 10 years so he was very root bound. Freshened up the soil and gave a good water seems to have helped although it's looking a little bare now after dropping the leaves. I'm seeing some new growth so I think it solved the problem, hopefully it'll come back strong! It's in a bright indirect side of my kitchen, and I usually let them dry out a but before rewatering
