So I know a few people that I'm close to who use sour cherries in some drink concentrate to treat kidney problems. It works really well. But supposedly it uses certain types of cherries to make it work; namely sour cherries.

We don't have a sour cherry tree but our grandma has a normal cherry tree.

I wanted to ask, if it would work to maybe mix the normal cherries with citrus juice or other citrus types to convert normal cherries to this sour cherry type to get it to work around the fact that our normal cherries don't have the same sourness?

And if anyone else has experience with this same thing of treating kidneys with sour cherries or other sour fruit please feel free to speak up! (?)

I hope someone else might have information on this that could help. Thanks.

Both regular (sweet) and sour cherries can be benfficial for kidney health. Sour cherries are lower in pottassium and that can be helpful for people with kidney inflammation. If you are on a low pottassium diet then sweet cherries may not be as good as sour cherries. Your regular sweet cherries are a wonderful source of anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Very thankful for your input. I'm also worried about this for dad, who is the person with the kidney problems.

Any idea how much difference there'd be in the potassium between sour cherries and normal cherries? I don't know yet if the potassium is a thing for this person yet, I'll have to do some follow up. But I would think that possibly mixing in citrus with a sweet cherry might be able to convert the overall mix closer to... the benefits in the sour cherries.

Is there anything else that the sour cherries might have that's different other than potassium level differences? I guess I'm trying to figure out how much would I be losing by just using normal cherries instead of sour cherries?

Thank you very much.

I don't think mixing sweet cherries with any type of fruit juice would lower the pottassium. To lower the potassium content in sweet cherries, you can leach them by soaking them in water. This process helps to draw out some of the potassium. I would use distilled water. You can also reduce potassium by consuming less cherries mixed with water and drink in moderation, especially if you have kidney issues.

I had my first gout attack 12 years ago. I could not walk for almost 2 weeks. During that time, after going to the doctor and taking his prescribed medicines, I started researching natural ways to deal with it. I found out that Tart Cherries/Sour Cherries would help with gout. I started taking Tart Cherry capsules. I started out with 250mg. I thought they helped as the attacks became a little less severe. Then I started taking 500mg capsules. There was no doubt that these really helped. So, I upped the amount to 3000mg and haven't had an attack in 7 years. I also have a complete bloodwork done every 3 months. My potassium levels are normal, and I have zero kidney issues.
