Well, it's getting close for many of us to plant our gardens. The date of last frost is here or soon will be but the soil is still cold and the only way to know if the soil is still too cold is with a thermometer. I have had them all. Multipurpose, 3 way, digital, battery powered, you name it I've tried it. The best you can get is just a plain old dial type and they cost less than $20. They are also fool proof and last forever. The link is the one I have. Rule of thumb is to plant seedlings when soil temp is above 65F.

Thank you @Chuck! I am starting my seeds now, a little less than 2 weeks prior to the spring equinox, and from march 20 I will be interested to measure the soil temperature climb over the days until I plant on this intentionally late garden.
