I am designing a standalone rainwater collector for gardening and other uses. I would like to hear thoughts on any specific things I should include in the design and how effective you think this will be.

Welcome @DDD .

A few specifics would help, e.g. are roofs involved in your collection system, gutters in place or to be added, how large is the collector?

How do you plan to move the collected water from the collector to the plant(s)?

It basically functions similarly to a water butt where the water comes out through a tap. Roofs aren't involved as it is meant to be standalone and hassle free. As for size, perhaps waist height or above.

You'll need a large collection area like a roof to collect any substantial amount of rain water.

Hello friend, sounds like a great idea because rainwater is so precious. Post some photos if you can and thank for sharing your project with us.

The primary function of a roof is to keep the area below it dry, but that is going to be a, possibly unwanted, secondary function of a stand alone collector. Also collection during drought periods, when water is most wanted, is nil. Even in England where we are noted for rain I have had my collection system from many sq. yards of roof run dry just when I want it most, anything effective is going to take up a large area. I would be far more interested in an effective mist collection system, mists often occur during droughts it seems, and because of it's vertical nature one needn't lose so much area.
