Hello;
I have a row of Purple Hopseed plants - about 15. Coastal San Diego area.
Last year and again this year most are completely covered with blooms/flowers. But randomly, here and there will be one with none. They look healthy but NO flowers.
The ones with flowers are weighted down with flowers. Last year they didn't loose the flowers/blooms/pods. The ones without flowers got new growth while the ones with an abundance of flowers became almost bare of leaves. I finally used my hand to 'brush off' the old blooms and then they got some new growth.
Is this normal?
Should I remove some of the blooms now?
Or just let nature take care of it?

Purple Hopseed Bush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') in the Soapberry Family (Sapindaceae) is a popular, mostly evergreen shrub for warm climate gardens, both arid or mesic. The species, Dodonaea viscosa, has a remarkably large natural range, showing almost pantropical and subtropical distribution.

Often a plant that fruits heavily will have less resources for vegetative growth. Pruning off flowers could possibly cause the plant to produce more leaves, but after the seed pods develop it would be too late. Continue to observe your plants. It is possible that shrubs that fruited heavily the year before may now fruit lightly. This is known as alternate bearing. The variation you see in your plants may or may not be genetic. Even though you may desire uniformity in a hedge, overall genetic variation is a good thing. Seed-grown plant populations will have higher genetic diversity which can prevent epidemic disease.
