Hello everyone,

I have been searching for gardening forums and am very pleased to have come across you on this site.

I wonder if I may ask for advice on a new Star Jasmine Trachelospermum jasminoides I planted out last autumn.

It did not do great over winter and this spring I noticed some yellow leaves with a possible venal chlorosis effect on some of them.

I have been feeding with alternating seaweed and blood fish and bone. It has been growing well and producing flowers and I thought it had recovered. But now I notice the new leaves are still a very light green and the veins are beginning to look paler again on them.

Can I ask is this is normal for a newish star jasmine or is the plant struggling and I need to do something different or even swap it out?

Some years ago I had a star jasmine at the other side of the house that did brilliantly and had very dark lush leaves. This one is not the same although does get more sun in its position.

Also a few leaves are looking a bit deformed.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts or opinions.

Welcome @Puffin

I know they are susceptible to scale insects and looking closely at the third photo is inconclusive but possible presence. Neem oil would be in order for those. The plant does look healthy to me, and I certainly would not trade it out at this point.

Thank you I hadn’t thought of infestation and this is really helpful. I can’t see any obvious scale at the moment, but will monitor closely. I will also be patient and give the plant a longer chance to flourish!

In a brighter location the foliage will be a lighter green unless very well fed. It looks very healthy and I see no sign of scale.
How frequently do you feed it and exactly what with?

That is interesting as I do note the odd leaf hidden by the rest and not so exposed to the sun looks a bit darker in colour.

I dug in some peat free compost on planting out last September with a handful of fish blood and bone granules. Then probably didn’t feed again until spring when I topped dressed with more compost and fish blood and bone.

Every 4 weeks or so I add more granules - either fish blood bone or organic kelp.
