I'd say some type of bromeliad related to pineapple. Either that, or some type of dracaena. Hard to say from the photo. Maybe divide the plant (it really needs it) and take one to a local nursery that specializes in tropicals.
This is indeed a Bromeliad (Bromeliaceae). It may be a type of pineapple (Ananas spp), but also consider other similar forms such as
the intergeneric hybrid x Cryptbergia 'Red Burst', which can look very similar. However, the flowers would look quite different.
