Plant identification

Hello folks. I wonder, could you please help me identify this plant. To give you an idea of scale the leaves are approximately 6 feet tall and the flower stems stand at about 8 foot. Last year's growth has clearly died and i wish to prune it back so it can recover bit would like to research the species first so I don't do any damage.

It’s a New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax). Cut the flower stem as low as you can and remove any leaves attached to that ”fan”. New leaves will sprout around the cut stem.
