The leaves don't look like those of cherries. Not those that I have any way.

Some gardeners grow it as a houseplant in Russia. I do not know if they can get the fruits in the house. :)

This plant has several names. (Acerola, Huesito, Grosella, Escobillo....)

Latin name Malpighia glabra. This is not a classic cherry. This is a different kind.

These plants are know a Barbados Cherrys here in Texas. They are a native plant that grows over most of southern Texas. Not much for eating but they make great wine and jelly.

True cherry trees require x amount of chilling hours or hours 45F (7C) and lower. The lowest chilling hour cherry I have heard of is 200 hours

I'm a beer drinker. All red wines taste the same to me, sweet. If true cherrys can grow in those temperatures I need to know the variety

I am not a drinker (according to society, apparently, drinking leads to broken families:p) so i always have wondered what fancy stuff like strawberry wine, plum wine etc tastes like....
A few people have told me that they do grow..... and one of the larger plant centres was carrying true cherry trees....not too expensive (so not an exotic plant). They dont thrive but they do survive.
Problem is, we (indians) dont pay attention to varities and cultivater at all in gardening..... only places varities and cultivaters are mentioned is exclusively in farming so i have no idea about the varity.
Btw, do you guys grow cherries in Texas?

Not in Texas. Wrong type of soil in the places where it stays cold long enough.
