Anyone heard of the tin pie pan trick? My grandmother used to put pie pans under her watermelons once they started to fruit. I never understood this, but she always had the best! Can anyone explain this to me?

I put straw mulch or pieces of cardboard under squash or other fruits/veggies ripening on the ground to prevent the area on the soil from getting soft or discolored. A pie pan would be a really good way to protect them from rot. I'm guessing this is why?

Neato gang. You think aluminum foil would work?

That's a clever idea, and makes perfect sense!

I've tried watermelon in the past and never got past seedling stage before something ate the leaves.
