We recently bought a house and the landscaping has been neglected for some time. There’s a peony bush which hasn’t been cut back. I’m just learning about gardening and it looks like it should have been pruned in the fall, but it looks pretty sad and I’m wondering if pruning it now would help or hurt it. We live in a cool, humid climate in the Midwest. Thank you!

Greetings, welcome to the Forums.

Please, post a photo. Tree Peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa and other species and hybrids) are usually sparsely branched shrubs with an irregular branching pattern. The look quite forlorn in Winter but will usually leaf out beautifully.
Yes, they can be pruned and now in early Spring before bud break would be the best time.
