We have a 6-7 foot phoenix canariensis as well as a small one and several chamaerops, which I am looking to plant next spring. I have moved them into a greenhouse, which is unfortunately a bit moist.

They’ve been fine after the first frost (unlike the bananas which turned brown almost immediately). Do I need to protect them or will they be fine until next year? Also, is there any chance to plant the canariensis palms in the uk zone 9a? Or will they die after the first frost in the winter? Thanks for any help!

In my zone 9a in Texas, they would not survive outside most winters.

AI states:
"Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) can generally tolerate temperatures down to about 20°F (-6°C), though young palms are more frost-sensitive."

One blast of the dreaded arctic polar vortex here would do them in... maybe different for you in UK. 🤠

Hmmm… thank you. that doesn’t sound promising. 😬 It doesn’t often get 20°F (-6°C) here, but if it does, I know what to expect.

They’re practically weeds here. We seldom get down to 20 anymore, but even when we did as long as it was just overnight they did fine.
