Palm tree growth

Hi,

I had this palm tree that died after the ivy overgrew and blocked the light. I've noticed this growth at the bottom. Is this the tree regrowing? Do I need to cut down the existing trunk?

I would say that if those red spikey leaves are coming up actually as suckers from this plant, that your Palm tree isn't a palm tree. It could be a Dracaena which has a trunk similar to what you have there, and reddish spikey leaves that grow in a rosette like you have there.

Or it's not a sucker and is some other plant that has opportunistically sprouted at the base of your dead plant.

Your “palm” is a Cordyline and those are sprouts from the base of the trunk. Remove the big trunk and enjoy the ‘babies’.

Thanks, I had no idea what the plant was so its good to know what to call it. Taking the entire trunk out presume this shouldn't disturb the plant below, hopefully it regrows.
