Hi, when on seed packets it says to sow seed in the Autumn, does that mean that the seed will germinate and the seedling will overwinter or that the seed will germinate in the spring.

In most instances it means the plant will over winter. It depends on what the plant will be. If for instance, it is a wild flower it will germinate in the spring, or, in technical terms, the seed must be stratified. Many plant seeds need stratification, not just wildflowers.
