Hello all,

I am new here and was hoping for some critique for my garden design.

I am looking to renovate my back garden soon to a modern design and have been working on some sketchups, however although I have got the general garden shape planned out I feel like it could be much better.

I think I modelled the fence a little too sharply, so I do have more room in the sitting area. I was thinking if an integrated seating area with fire pit would fit or be suitable or maybe that's too bulky for the space available. I feel like I need to do something more with the dining platform also. I will be having lighting around, I just haven't decided where and what kind yet.

If you do find some time to share some thoughts I would appreciate the input.

I can't help you on the aesthetics but a successful garden starts with sunshine. Whether you are growing ornamental plants or veggies or both they all need sunshine to varying degrees. To what extent does your layout allow for full sun?

To me, it’s a pretty sterile garden as you have very little to look at. A patio with a palm tree and three shrubs, or small trees in pots is not going to give you much to look at. No flower beds, no seasonal color at all???

It’s what you like? Go for it. Not my cuppa.

It’s a very low maintenance garden, rather sterile as said, but you’re not designing for my tastes. That said, a few comments. Assuming that is real grass, cutting close to the edge won’t be easy, some 10 cm pavers along the edges would solve that. The trees in pots will need watering especially in summer, even when you are on holiday. You could plant them directly in the ground instead.

I would add evergreen shrubs, but as said I’m not you.

I think you need something more to look at when you are seated. A climbing plant up the pergola? A pond or water feature? A flowering shrub trained along the fence? A fruit tree has blossom in Spring. Do you get areas of full sun where you can make a flower bed which may also attract bees, birds and butterflies? A bird feeder?

For me fences are really boring to look at, but provide a great opportunity to grow things up, a narrow border along the fences would make mowing easier, as someone suggested, and give you room to plant. I have various honeysuckles and cotoneaster, (not the horizontal one), that's flowers, scent, and autumnal berries, and very low maintenance, but there are all sorts of possibilities, cordon fruit for example.
