You can grow your own with sugar. A popular version is molasses. Plants trade carbon for help in the same way. If they need to, which is a whole 'nother topic of soil prep, they can call for outside biology by giving sugar via their roots. It has a cost to the plant so it is not a light thing, but what the bacteria do is more important. Perhaps they are needed to enzymatically dissolve some minerals for fertility reasons. Perhaps they are food to feed endomatic or ectomatic fungi for pest control or moisture aquisition via their long hyphae. Its really quite fascinating. Better than an opera in my book. Anyway, the plant is generally in control. Especially those that have been in situ for a period of years.

I've bought something like this and tried to use it and it works well, but not as good as I've expected. I've just taken it into the soil then took there some compost and then cared about plants as usual.
