I have found most plant them too close from seed.

They are to be 12-15 inches apart. I’m thinking start them in 2 inch pots and Transplant where I want them and they will be big and beautiful.

They self seed, some get hoed, but if they are somewhere they don't interfere with anything they get left, like forgetmenot.

Saw Alan Tichmarsh is recommending French Marigolds to grow with tomatoes as he says they produce a strong scent that deters whitefly.

The last 2 years I had a huge pest problem with tomatoes and got absolutely nothing. Planted marigolds and basil in with my plants this year and not one aphid or pest.

That’s been my experience too. When plants are started too close together, they end up competing for space and never really reach their full potential. Starting them in small pots and transplanting them later sounds like a great plan. I’ve had much better results that way. Good garden maintenance helps too—kind of like how LeafGuard helps keep things flowing properly around the house!

I'm guilty of that mistake... the seed packet I bought said they only needed to be 4-8 inches apart from one another, now that they're getting bigger though, I'm realizing they need a lot more room ( ;´ - `;)
Any advice for fixing the problem? I'm a bit worried to try and dig them up, I have a pretty bad streak of luck when it comes to transplanting or uprooting.

Spacing depends somewhat on what you want from the plant.... multiple flowers and appealing appearance benefits from adequate spacing. Nematode suppression and pest deterrence is a different matter where you want close, even crowed spacing.

Marigolds spaced out over 15 inches have little or zero pest deterrence in my experience.

I’m getting into Borage and beginning to think it’s a great Companion Plant?

I would give borage a rating of "good" as compared to marigold "fair" and basil "outstanding".
