I am looking for a low maintenance plant. By that I mean, I am looking for one that doesn't need that much sunlight. I want something small that could possibly fit on my desk without taking up too much space. I was thinking maybe a cactus, but I was hoping to see some other options.

There are quite a few out there to choose from. Are you new to plants or have you had houseplants before? Go to the website ivillage.com/top-10-houseplants or womensday.com/.../7-easy-to-care-for-houseplants-1. the internet has no shortage of sites like this so take some time and enjoy looking!

No, I am not new to plants, at all. I was looking for something very specific. I know that many plants do well indoors but alot of them that I know of a way too big. I wanted something small (that stayed small!) and that didn't need much light. When I did a search, it seemed like you had to choose between size or light needs. I may have to do some deeper searching or just settle for a cactus. Thank you for the link, though it seems to be broken.

Have you thought of a miniature fern? They're lovely plants and they don't need much light. I used to have one when I was a teenager. As far as I remember, it didn't grow big.

What about a cacti or a succulent? I started off with succulents when I was younger, I had a great experience becaue they are so beautiful and really hard to kill. On the other hand... cacti are so versatile, some even bloom! They don't grow much and do well if neglected. Those things can almost look after themselves!

I have actually never seen a miniature fern. I do kind of like how they look though. If they don't grow too large, I may have to look into getting one. As for a succulent, I could picture that type of plant but could not put a name to it. The cacti that can bloom seem really magnificent. They're so lovely and beautiful and like you said, they're hard to kill - like the succulent. I will have to go to a nursery and see if any of the local ones carry any of the three. Thank you for your suggestions. They are much appreciated.

My miniature fern wasn't big, but unfortunately I don't know what variety it was. I lost it many years ago. As far as I remember, it was a low maintenance plant. I just watered it from time to time and it was enough:)
As for the looks, in my opinion miniature ferns are really pretty:

A peace lily would be something to consider. They don't need much light at all. As a matter of fact, we have one in our basement (that gets NO sunlight) and it's doing just fine. AND, they come in a variety of sizes.

I have a very tiny one in my room. If you want to see it, let me know--I can get a picture for you.

Low maintenance plants I have are Chinese Evergreens, Spider plants, Ivys, Rabbit Foot plants, ferns, and Bromelaides. They do not need much sun, and I water them once a week.
