I need to do something with last year's leaves so I can get started again. Any recommendations for storing the leaf mold once it's ready? I put some tomato panels together last year and covered the framework with black plastic. I noticed recently the pile has gone way down.

What a project, @Zig and you will have plenty of leaves to work with! Fall is here and we usually bagged our leaves for the garbage man to pick up. We can't even burn them here in our city unless we apply for a permit.

You can store it in old fertiliser sacks, stops it drying out.

I know members that go out at night before the garbage truck comes and nick the bags of leaves:D

Yep, the brace is to support the wall, whole thing needs re building really.

Leaf mold? never heard of it - now you really know how much of a novice I am!
Can't make it in Canada, on account of having the wrong leaves on your $20 bills :D

I did email them about it at the time

Dear Sir/Madame,

We read about your recent Faux pas with the Norwegian Maple leaf and would like to pass on our sympathies.

Should you require any future help in plant identification, please feel free to visit our Plant identification forum.

I'm sure our members will be more than willing to help with any identification problems.

Kind regards,

Had a reply too :)

Good day,

This is in response to your email concerning the $20 polymer bank note.

The bank note designers with the help of a subject matter expert (dendrologist: a scientist who specializes in the branch of botany that deals with trees and shrubs), created a unique stylized design of a Canadian maple leaf much like the design on our National Flag is a stylized image of Canadian species of maple leaves.

On the advice of this expert, steps were taken to ensure that the design of the leaf in the secondary window is not representative of a Norway maple.

Indeed, the design was developed to contain different aspects of various Canadian species of maple trees. For example, the Bank's leaf design does not have a rectangular overall shape nor does the leaf display the long pointed lobes that identify the Norway maple leaf.

The hope is that this design will appeal to many different Canadian's perceptions of a Canadian maple leaf, regardless of what species may be more prominent in their area of the country, rather than targeting one particular species of maple trees.

I hope this information is helpful and thank you for your interest in Canadian currency.

Regards,
Carol Ann Levett
