Hello all,

New to the group, so please go easy with me!

Have moved to a new property three or four months ago, and having all kinds of problems with our lawn. Some bits grow really well (too well) but others are brown patchess of nothing that will not respond despite numerous reseedings. Some small patches of almost soil only. Can't seem to post photos of the lawns.

The initial problems were no doubt attributable to the vast quantities of moss that exist. Suspect previous owner we not a keen gardener. However, all moss now removed after some back breaking effort.

I'm looking for advice/ suggestions of how I can get these problem areas.

Many thanks in advance.

Hello, friend. Moss will only thrive in acidic conditions. When the soil pH is below 6 the moss will continue to be a problem. What I would do if it were my lawn is to use lime to raise the pH every season.

Ive noticed that where I use weed and grass killer the moss grows.
I wonder if it was over fertilized In the areas that are dead.
It might explain why the grass is growing so well.
I wonder if lime like mentioned above would correct it.

Shade? Lots of tall trees? Clay soil? Yes certain mossed survive weak glyophosate. Probably others too What kind of weed killer? You know you need a proper soil test right? Tell them your context is grass. What is your USDA grow zone and latitude? This will help us understand cold winter temps and summer heat. Your question needs more details. You may need gypsum instead of lime based on your soil type for oxygen reasons. Have you done a jar test for soil content? A mayonaise type jar and a tablespoon of soap. Take soil to 1\2-2\3 fill jar from bare spots just below the surface. Fill with water, add soap and shake shake shake. Let it settle for a time to clear. Fine clay or silt may never settle and could indicate oxygen issues (porespace) that the gypsum will help flocculate. Take it separately from a grassy area. Are they the same?
