Hi all,

Very much an amateur in the world of horticulture here, I am hoping someone can identify the climber in these images? I am in the midst of a restoration and would like to reinstate the original climber if it can be identified. It is from a house in northern England, I believe it is an Ivy but does anyone here know exactly which type, and if possible the approximate rate of growth per year? It appears to be a slow-growing plant, I am toying with a fast-growing virginia creeper in its place but would prefer an evergreen for year-round coverage.

Thanks!

Hedera. The botanical name for Ivy. There are about 11 varieties. Often found in woodlands, attaching themselves to trees. From the photos. I would say that the Ivy in the photo of the two girls is probably either the common Hedera Helix, or, as it is variagated, Hedera Colchia. These appear to be the most used to decorate the external walls of stately homes. They are very hardy, and often for the gardener can become a pest.

Another plant that is used belongs to the Vitis family. Vitis is actually a vine. Many vcultivars belong to this family. Probably the main attraction to the Vitis is. It's fast growin and provides some wonderful autumn colours. Hope this helps.
