Is this spider mites on my dipladenia?

The leaves have been yellowing over the summer and I have tried to make sure there is enough (but not too much water) and sun etc. New growth looks fine but then starts yellowing. I have now noticed there are small green patches under the leaves that looks like something is sucking on the plant. I remember this happening when the plant had spider mites last year, but I don't see webs this time (I did last year). Is this mites, a pest, fungus, or something else? I don't think it is a water issue because the new growth looks fine, but then it starts getting yellow patches after a few days / weeks.

If it were my plant I would cut the new growth off and wash off all the leaves-soap and water, then start new plant in water by removing the 2 lower leafs where the roots will form. Keep it in a shaded indirect light covered in plastic like a greenhouse effect to prevent spreading of the infestation and so the plant won’t dry out. Check for new infestation on new section. If so add a systemic treatment in the water To control a new infestation .
the origional plant use a systemic in the soil to eliminate the infestation and cover with clear plastic to keep them from spreading.
This way you could end up with two plants one with spotty leaves and pest eliminated with the soil, systemic and and or one new plant with healthy leaves.

Spider mites leave tiny visible webs. I don't see any. Looks more like it just needs fertilizer and they don't like to get too dry, thst will cause the leaves to start yellowing, along with lack of frequent fertilization. They also like being outside in an East facing position so long as temps stay bove 40 degrees.
Here's mine which I fertilize with a slow release fertilizer every other month until temps get too cold, then I put it in a sunny window over winter and water it much less. ( They rest and go dormant then) and don't fertilize it again until I put it outside again in spring.

Thanks for the reply. The yellowing started shortly after I fertilized the plant last month. I fertilized it also earlier in the spring. I have been watering regularly so the pot doesn't feel too dry, so I'm pretty sure it's not a watering issue. I had also been gone for a week and returned and gave it water, but the leaves that had been yellowing gradually became much more yellow, while other new leaves looked perfectly green. This plant was growing well in the same location last year, so I don't think it is anything I am doing differently.

Your dipladenia looks great!

To the other reply about taking a cutting, I have already done that and hope it takes root.

Then I would say the issue is more that it is lacking sufficient sunlight. It will do much better outside with morning sun and bloom it's little head off. Mine never stops blooming from spring until I take it inside when temps drop.

Yours looks fantastic. Mine is almost definitely not getting enough sun. I live in an apartment with a large balcony which was fine for the dipladenia at first, but then a 20-30 storey apartment building went up across from the balcony and now the plants on the balcony get barely any sun. So the dipladenia hasn't been blooming for the last couple years.

Ah hah !! You might want to get it a grow light and keep that over it for 10 hours daily. Then you'll get an abundance of blooms. They're really not much of a plant without blooms on, are they ?

Hi,

It seems like your plant may have a pest issue, even without webs. Spider mites, aphids, or thrips could be the cause. Try these steps:
  • Inspect under the leaves for pests.
  • Wipe the leaves to remove any insects.
  • Use neem oil or insecticidal soap.
  • Monitor humidity, as dry air can encourage mites.
Since new growth is healthy, addressing the pests should help.

Thanks!
