Is this apple tree chewed beyond saving?

So I am new to fruit trees and didn't think to protect them from animals - honestly, as a previous city dweller, I never would have thought that animals eat bark (I know, I know...). Anyways, I lost 3 so far (two cleanly chewed in half) and this one has some marks on it, as shown in the attached image.

The marks always seem to be a deep chunk and an upward pull, like strips are being pulled up and off.

Is it worth saving or should I pull up and replace? It's a four year old apple, has been doing well, but I've read that this damage can cause it to be week the entire life of the tree, or require extra watering.

Are protectors like these any good?

They seem so short, though I guess they would cover this damage at least.

Thanks!
