Our first snowfall and power is out. Things usually bounce back but im sure there will be a lot of damage. Its a wet heavy snow that my snowblower struggled with. 20251110_080547.jpg20251110_072245.jpg

We get a lot of snow here normally about 60 to 70 inches a winter. The winds coming off the lake make it even more brutal.
We are in an area that gets a lot of lake effect snow and that's what we got mostly last night.
You can travel 10 to 20 miles east and there may be nothing.
I use to love the snow not long ago. I was always hot. Taking salt pills has lowered my body temp and I began feeling cold or normal a couple years ago.
Nature is relentless.

I got that dump yesterday too! The ground here isn't frozen yet here so it will melt in a few days, I'm not going to put the snowblower through the stress of blowing that pea soup. I love winter, but not a fan of thick heavy wet snow.

There is something about the way moisture circulates and crystalises in clouds that means snow picks up more nitrogen than rain from the atmosphere, 60 to 70 inches should make a huge difference to fertility.

5 miles south got 14 inches when they normally only get one this time of year.
The trees and bushes were not ready for that. I have some cleaning up to do when the temps get back to normal.

I understand being not ready @dirty hands ...last night we had an unexpected sneaky night frost, just enough to get the tomatoes.

Didn't appear to hurt anything but tomatoes, but since they were unprotected, I fear the worst for them.

Many years of doing this and still get caught by surprise on occasion. 😞

p.s. supposed to be 80 deg. F here tomorrow.

That frost was right on time for our new usda zone 8b designation. First frost avg Nov 11, which was yesterday. We were zone 7b long ago, then 8a for at least a decade or more. Now it is borderline tropical. I should cover the garden from June through August. All the tomato, peppers and squash got burnt up by the 25f cold snap. I bet we still get snow in Feb. Should I risk setting out pots in march? They will probably stall but I am gonna go to ground early next spring. Thermo pen in hand of course.

The farmers always complain when we dont get a lot of snow.

We have orchards vineyards corn and soybean in abundance.
In the fall there are old school busses painted green and windows removed that get filled with watermelon and cucumbers to take for processing.

Semi loads of green beans in the fall. The trailers are big wire cages.

Its a great place to live if you like agriculture. A lot of potatoes too.

Michigan is only second to California in agriculture.
