An extremely difficult task for me - having to choose what would be my favorite edible or ornamental plant as there are so many that I could very easily call favorites - however after having tried to narrow my choices down a bit - this is what I've come up with

vegetable: - rainbow peppers
flowering plant: - strelitzia " mandela's gold "
fruit: - any stonefruit
nut: - hazelnut
tree: - cercis canadensis " forest pansy "
herb: - any of the mint family

Oh it is and even though I'm very easily seduced by any plant that bears reddish purple foliage and there are many other varieties of Cercis Canadensis - there isn't anything quite like " Forest Pansy " - as this particular variety seems to be capable of bowling just about everyone over - with the ever changing seasonal colors of its heart shaped leaves followed by the most magnificent of autumn displays

not forgetting the stunning sight of its blossom in late spring

Nice, fun game. I think for the "usable" plants I'd go with stuff we use the most.

Veggie: Romaine
Flowering plant: Tiger lily (fiances favorite)
Fruit: Boysenberry
Nut: Pistachio
Tree: Pink Lady apple
Herb: Basil
