its the roots that are important now. How much shade is it getting?

possible too much sun.

more shade compared to earlier in summer where they were in there for most of the day

again looking at pic. pull some of that mulch away from the base of the plant. about 3 inches.

it can, but too close to the base is not good it will cause root rot. I have 13 varieties of hydrangeas, Mulch needs to be 2-3 inches away from the base. And I just googled, same information came up. I am so smart. wow-me.
