Basically plants want to grow, it's what they do, and they need some food, water and light to do it, and a temperature that suits them, how much of each varies from plant to plant, pretty much what cpp says, but some are more particular and difficult than others. My advice to beginners is to go for cheap plants, expensive ones are not dear because they are better, but because they are harder to grow, and cheap ones can be just as good. I don't know what your climate is like, but I have the impression it is probably ideal for a lot of things. Look around and see what other people are growing, the popular ones are the ones to start with, and if people see you are interested in their garden they will often stop for a chat, you can learn a lot about your local conditions and what they suit that way.
