I'm trying to create a dense hedge to block an undesirable view from my house. I live in Jacksonville and from my research the leyland cypress seems like a good match.

I want it to reach to about 30 feet height max and still have good coverage that I can't see through it. How far apart base to base should I plant them?

Also how far should they be from my fence?

Around here these trees get a LOT taller than 30 feet. 50 feet is about normal and some I have seen are a lot taller than that. And their spread at maturity 20+ feet. Have you done a google search? This might not be the tree you need.

But would they not stay shorter if they are planted closer to each other?

No. They will reach for the sun. In fact, if they are too close they will probably be taller. The only thing you will change is the lower portions of the trees. They will intermingle and die in later years due to lack of sunlight.

ok, in that case I may need to search for a shrub instead of a tree

After some research I think I found the match

I think I have to plant them 3 feet from each other to create a full hedge. not 100% sure yet.

I was gonna say 10 feet each side. Everybody ignores it and at full mast pays the price.
