The reason they said to watch it is probably because your Ph level is out of whack...lime is a great amendment that raises soil pH, supplies calcium, and improves soil structure.

I recently posted 7 consecutive years of soil tests results that came back with "No N, P, K required" If you are interested, check it out and you will see a near straight line of Ph at 6. and calcium levels at or above optimum.

Weald clay is well acidic, and this used to be oak forest a few hundred years ago, still odd oak trees dotted about, lots of oak leaves making stuff acidic. I sling a few handfulls of lime about regularly.

You know I’m thinking the same trying to garden in my woods but they said no.
