I need a good valve at the bottom of my plastic barrel that I can screw a garden hose to. Not sure what to get, and once I do, not sure how to get my arm through the small opening and reach to the bottom to deal with it.

Use the whole pvc glue universe. A ball valve will snag less. Put a filter after that valve, and make sure the container allows you to add stuff in a metered way so that way we can call you Captain ControlaBelly!

Need more info, for a 55 gallon plastic barrel you can drill a hole slightly smaller and screw a hose bib directly to the barrel, no leaks if done correctly.

Home depot...
If using a standard hose bib from HD the water will come out slowly

Amazon...
To dispense the water quickly I would get a 1/4 turn ball valve hose bib

I used a bulkhead fitting on my new barrel but my 55 g barrels all were threaded directly to the barrel. The bottom bulkhead fitting had a cap that was removed. This hose bib is hooked into a transfer pump.

For another feed I installed a bulkhead fitting but will be replacing this hose bib for a 1/4 turn, this hose bib runs too slow. One valve feeds the pond and the other is for filling the bucket and adding compost teas or urea.

The hose bib on the bottom that feeds the transfer pump doesn't matter because its just to prime the pump.

Great pics, but what I really need to see is the hardware on the inside of the barrel........that's where I need the help. I don't want any leaks too.

I already posted a pic on what you need, the rubber gasket goes on the hose bib when its on the inside of the barrel, then the adaptor gets screwed on.

But I really need more info to give you better advice, if its a 55 gallon drum that is thick plastic, you dont need any hardware on the inside, just drill a hole and screw the hose bib in, you can add teflon tape if it does happen to leak.

If you do want to put something on the inside you need to finagle a fitting on the inside or use a bulk head fitting.

these drums all have the fittings screwed directly into the barrel.

I leave all that plumbing stuff in china and put a siphon hose in the top. If you want to regulate flow put a valve on the discharge end of the hose.

For some reason I got an e-mail because I posted once long long time ago to a thread "Seeking advice for my first spring garden" so just thought I'd drop in to see if anything had changed. I see it hasn't and navigation is just as difficult as ever so I won't be staying around. If anyone is interested in seeing an example of how simple forum navigation could, be drop in for a visit to diychatroom.com
