I am already feeling the winter blues while waiting for the next spring planting season. I want to find ways to continue gardening during the colder months but I need YOUR help! 🌱

Do you have house plants? They don't just look good , they can help lower humidity and improve air quality, especially in winter when windows are usually shut. It seems counterintuitive at first, a pot of moist earth lowering humidity, but plenty of them absorb water through the leaves.
Support your local library, they are a terrific resource, but are often a first target for economic cuts if not used, remember to explore fiction and non-fiction. They also often welcome general help for all sorts of things, story times, helping people use computers, all sorts.
I am a story teller, but there are all sorts of ways to engage with kids, and schools often welcome help as well, be it going in to give talks about something you know, like gardening, or helping on a one to one basis with kids like backward readers, it can be really rewarding,

Hi,

I totally understand the winter blues! Here are a few ways I’ve stayed connected to gardening during the colder months:

  1. Indoor Plants: I focus on caring for my indoor plants, like houseplants or herbs. It’s a great way to keep that gardening spirit alive.
  2. Seed Starting: I start planning for next spring by organizing seeds, ordering new varieties, or even starting some seeds indoors if you have the space.
  3. Garden Planning: Winter is a good time to plan my garden layout, research new techniques, and make a list of what I want to grow next season.
  4. DIY Projects: I sometimes try gardening-related crafts, like creating plant markers, building simple garden structures, or making compost bins.
  5. Outdoor Winter Gardening: If the weather permits, I try things like winter sowing or caring for hardy plants that can handle cold temps.
Staying connected with nature, even in small ways, definitely helps with those winter blues! 🌿

Thanks!

My gardening is continuous 365 days. Something always growing even in dead of winter.

Cover crops are absolutely magical in soil building and weed control and crop rotation for controlling diseases and pests.

Depending on your climate, many varieties of cover crops will survive low temps down to single digits...this area of my garden has turnips, daikon radish, rye, clover, etc. for this winter and will provide veggies for the table as well as build soil all winter...

Many veggies such as the brassicas, carrots, turnips, onions, potatoes, etc. can be grown all winter in zones where temps don't fall below the teens...

For plants that require protection, Hügelkultur containers are extremely effective growing vessels and can easily be covered, protected with light bulb, and/or moved to protection. I'm growing celery, peppers, kale, radish, tomatoes, potatoes, horseradish and others currently in containers that are easily protected from low temps...

I make braided rugs in winter. I looked at some tutorials on youtube and after picking which method I liked I started making them.

This one's in my laundry room. I buy sheets at the thrift store, rip them to 2 1/2" wide, (for this one) and then the method I use uses a wooden needle with a slot for the material and you kind of sew it with knots, if that makes sense.

This one is in my kitchen infront of the stove. I used 1 1/2" strips for this one for a tighter weave.

I have a basement gardening setup, a greenhouse, and a pretty good size outdoor garden. I used to try to go year round but now I look forward to a break LOL. But by February I'll be starting seeds.
