Afternoon all,

First time poster,long time reader...

I have this plant, we were gifted if about 4 years ago and I have never really known what it is, from my research I think it may be a Fatsia Japonica, but I'm not expert.

Anyway, I'm less concerned about what it is and more worried about why it looks like it does, it looks a bit... well... weedy! I want it to bush out and become a healthy green bush and instead its really wirey and just looks sad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Digby the Boarder Collie to give a sense of scale!

Its time to replace the potting mix with some new quality potting mix. On watering day, after watering, gently lay the plant on its side and slide it out of the planter. Very gently remove the old potting soil and replace the old with new soil. Water it in and leave it a lone for a few days.

Awesome, thanks for the guidance... do you think it is a Fatsia Japonica?

Any pruning required, or should I just focus on a fresh potting compost... is it worth increasing the size of the pot, i have a similar height pot which is about 14in across?

Yes, it is a Fatsia japonica.
Yes, you should remove the old leaves.
Yes, that’s just the way they grow with very few branches and big tropical-looking leaves.
No, you don’t need to prune any stems.
No, you don’t really need to remove any soil. If you want to put it in a bigger pot, just remove it from that one, place it in a bigger one with enough fresh potting mix underneath to raise the soil surface to 1” below the rim of the pot, and add fresh soil around the outside. Tamp well and soak thoroughly.
