Helenium are wonderful flowers for the Summer and Fall garden.
I dislike the common name Sneezeweed as the plants are
not allergenic. The pollen grains of most primarily insect-pollinated plants do not cause allergies, as they are not airborne.
The Drumstick Helenium (
Helenium puberulum), native to California and northern Baja California is another interesting species to grow.
The proportions of the capitula (flower heads) are what is so remarkable. The disc is enlarged to form an nearly complete sphere, and the abbreviated ray flowers hang down beneath like a short fringe.
