A herbaceous perennial native to North America, Helenium autumnale is commonly called sneezeweed. Beautiful bright yellow blooms appear in late summer and autumn.

Helenium are wonderful flowers for the Summer and Fall garden.

I dislike the common name Sneezeweed as the plants are not allergenic. The pollen grains of most primarily insect-pollinated plants do not cause allergies, as they are not airborne.

The Drumstick Helenium (Helenium puberulum), native to California and northern Baja California is another interesting species to grow.
The proportions of the capitula (flower heads) are what is so remarkable. The disc is enlarged to form an nearly complete sphere, and the abbreviated ray flowers hang down beneath like a short fringe.

Sneezeweed certainly is an unfortunate alternative name for Helenium plants. As you likely know, rather than suggesting that the plant is apt to cause an allergic response, the name refers to what had been an old practice of using the dried flowers and leaves as a snuff to induce sneezing.

How interesting to read about the Drumstick Helenium (Helenium puberulum) species. It certainly does look like it would be quite an interesting Helenium to grow, with its lollipop shape and vivid colors. They are beautiful flowers.

Here is another remarkable Helenium photo, Siamese twin Helenium autumnale flowers.
