Hi everyone, I'm looking at different greengage varieties picking times and trying to decide what is the best late season one.

According to different online sources, the Old Greengage harvesting times are around the begging/middle of August in UK, depending on the weather conditions. Cambridge Gage is pretty similar. Willingham Gage is fruiting towards the middle/end of August and Lindsey Gage is ready towards the end of August or the begging of September in different years.

Can anyone confirm these picking times from experience, and also if there are any other late varieties and how they compare taste wise? Thanks

For anyone like me who doesn't know what greengages are I asked AI.

What they are: Greengage plums belong to a specific group of cultivars of the common Middle Eastern and European plum species, Prunus domestica. In France, they are known as "Reine Claude" plums.

Oh, yes, greengages or just gages are usually small to medium sized rounded plums with a very specific melon-like flavour. I've bought a lost label plum last year and it turned out to be a greengage when it fruited this season. The plums tasted quite different than the standard plum varieties, they had a really exquisite flavour with the perfect balance of sweetness and were ready in the begging of August. It was a hot year in the UK, so my guess is that if the weather is not so favourable, the picking time will normally be around the middle of August (a holiday time for the people living in the UK). Hence my question about the harvesting times of late season varieties that will be ready towards the beginning of September.

Reading the word "greengage" brought back some happy memories. My Mom was always a fruit tree grower and made sure us kids ate a goodly amount of fruit. We never had a greengage plum tree, but I remember picking them out at the market, when I was a kid. They were one of my favorite plums. hardly ever seen them here in CA.
