Can anyone identify this issue I am having with my Green Spire euonymus’s? It is causing entire branches to die. Seems to be isolated to individual branches and no the entire shrub. Bartlett tree service could t even id the issue and has sent a branch to their lab and I am still wait g to hear back from them.

Several fungi can infect euonymus, leading to dieback, most especially in stressed plants. I have noticed Euonymus getting hit worse than any other shrubs. While you are waiting for the lab report, I would cut out the infected stuff and get rid of it safely. Make sure you pick up all the infected stuff to remove any fungal spores. Keep us posted.

Update from Bartlett Tree Labs

Diagnosis:

Microscopic examination of the submitted euonymus branch cuttings revealed extensive growth of adventitious
roots on the stems (see included photos taken with the microscope camera). This often occurs when the stems are in
a moist environment with little air movement (dense planting, stems close to the soil line, etc.). The submission
form noted that these plants have been watered frequently, which may have created conditions conducive to
adventitious root formation.

Recommendations:
No treatment is needed for the adventitious roots, though identifying the factors keeping the air around the stems
moist and managing them may help to slow adventitious root formation.

After consulting with Bartlett Tree Service, it was most likely caused by over watering the right side of the hedge where I had planted some ground cover late in the spring and was concerned, they would not take. I had to leave town for almost 3 weeks and hired a young lady to water my plants so she most likely over watered this area.
