Hey guys,

Can I ask a quick favor? My parents love to garden, and my dad especially LOVES his compost. I just got off the phone with him and they are at the garden store looking for a special tomato seed.

Since he has every tool and whatnot he needs, I'm looking to make him a unique shirt for his birthday and can't decide what's cool.

Could you help me out and pick a shirt phrase he would love on a survey my brother and I came up with? I have zero knowledge in gardening/composting and want to do something different for him. And maybe one for mom too while we are at it, lol

I am also open to a garden tool you love and can't live without, in case it's something he might not have. I am pretty sure he has it all though

Thanks!
-Wendi

A grub hoe from ez digging. I can't ever have enough of those

A wheel hoe is nice too but pricey

Some people like potato forks a lot. Or a good shovel like "king of spades"

Have you thought about unique plants/seeds, that's what I'd want but you really have to know them, is he into anything in particular?

Of the shirt ideas i like, "another day at the plant" most, but i don't get real excited about fashion

Martin, thank you so much! He has all of those things you mentioned. I get a tour every time I'm there, and he shows off, haha. Mom just loves her flowers.

As far as seeds, I have done that before, so I was looking for something more unique. That's why I thought a custom shirt or something with a clever/funny gardening phrase. I just wasnt sure what is cool/funny for actual gardeners.

Ah, nothing is more unique than seeds. You can spend your whole life trying new plants without leaving the genus euphorbia or even solanum

Shirts are cool too, I'm not trying to dissuade you, but the only reason I'd wear a silly shirt about gardening is because my daughter gave it to me for my birthday. I guess when I retire maybe as a conversation piece. But you know your dad

The classic gift around here is a case of beer and a gun, unless he's a felon then maybe a nice knife

That’s such a fun idea 😄 For your dad (the compost king), you could go with phrases like “Compost Happens,” “Official Soil Scientist,” “Turning Scraps Into Gold Since ____,” or “Lord of the Bins.” For your mom, maybe “Head Gardener & Tomato Whisperer,” “Bloom Where You’re Planted,” or “Garden Queen.” If he really has every tool, a high-quality hori-hori knife or ergonomic pruning shears are always a welcome upgrade. Honestly, the custom shirts will probably mean the most 🌱. And a side tip — if you’re ordering through apps for cashback, Upside customer service can be surprisingly helpful.

"Compost Happens"

Also a compost pile thermometer.

Play in the dirt before you become dirt?

I've been on the receiving end of well intentioned gifts and I'm usually disappointed. Tools or gizmos that look cool and someone spent time choosing but usually are duplicates or don't work well.

I've expressed this: don't buy me anything I didn't ask for, no substitution either.

What might be best is to spend the day helping.

I like all these suggestions. My daughter got me "Garden City Gardener" with some veggie pics on it. I live in Garden City. My son got me a gardener's seat/kneeling stand for Christmas.
