Fall/Winter Veggies 2026

One year ago, I started a similar thread for 2025 and ran it through Jan. the following year. It is really handy to look back at that thread and see what was planted when and what worked and what didn't. The participation here was really good also so let's do it again for 2026. Your participation is welcome.

This year I'm going to plant 4 main rows for the fall and that will be followed by two rows later for spring onions/garlic (Oct. 15) and potatoes (Feb. 14).

Each of these 4 rows have been amended with a Sunn Hemp cover crop turned under, a generous layer of composted cow manure, and a second cover crop of buckwheat and mustard greens turned under as green manure.

HK tubs are already planted in three kinds of squash, tomatoes (@Peaches recommended), carrots, red Cherokee lettuce (as recommended by @tundra), Black root Salsify, cucumbers, and Parsley.

The four rows will be first planted in the record for me fifth crop of sweet corn this year. About 12 ft of each of the four rows. Then green beans including blue lake and three different varieties of tepary beans (as discussed by @Martin Mikulcik) covering another 12 ft of each row. The remaining space will be filled with potatoes, various brassicas, Kohlrabi, and miscellaneous leafy veggies.

Amazing the things you can grow in fall, for me I've planted mostly turnips and mustard spinach but a few daikons, radishes, beets, carrots and later winter grains and garlic. I could maybe do more but it's something like 70 days to first frost now. I agree that these threads are informal notes for the futures.

70 days can grow a lot of veggies, especially those that are tolerant of light frosts.

First fall 2026 veggies...cucumbers. These were supposed to be straight 8 cucumbers but looks like someone got their seed mixed up. Delicious cucumbers nonetheless...

Will corn germinate in daily high temps of 106 deg F?

Yes, and germinate at a very good rate. Four short rows looking good for now but hopefully the temps will moderate soon.

Green beans? No on germination at these temps. Have already replanted with the likelihood of a weather change coming soon.
