What are some good ways to establish paths through an overgrown garden? There are sections of the garden that are almost inaccessible due to overgrown paths currently.

Relatedly, could I use a roto-tiller to help establish such a path? Would that be better at a different time of year?

We used the tractor mower with the blade set high to make pathways through the overgrown grass this year. With regular mowing since the paths are looking quite good. DSCF0020.JPG

I suppose a rototiller could be used, but usually that would not be necessary. Just work your way through the undergrowth with a pair of secateurs and perhaps a hedge clipper.
Keep the path on the narrow side at first. You can widen it more later if needed.
Next, mulch the path with cardboard and wood-chips. Late you might consider a rock mulch or other more permanent pavement, if the path warrants such an endeavor.
If the path is to be only a footpath, don't be afraid of making dramatic curves and angles that will open up new vistas with each turn. However, if the path will have maintenance uses that require wheelbarrows and carts, keep to more modest and navigatable curves.
