English ivy pest?

Hi everyone. I'm totally new to all this and hoping someone can help. My wife planted 10 English ivy plants 2 weeks ago and two of the plants had their stems chewed thru ( looks more like a clean cut). My wife also claims there was a hole in the ground next to each plant. Is this some kind of a pest living in the ground? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you

Might be cutworms. See if there is a curled up white grub around that hole.
