Hi. Can anybody help me to identify if these two honey suckles are the type they flower on old previous years wood or current years new wood? The pictures were taken on 17th May. The buds look like they are just about to open?
Most Honeysuckles (Lonicera) tend to flower on new stems or those that have grown in a previous year. Yours seem to be early summer flowering.
If in doubt when to prune, it's best left until just after they finish flowering but I have pruned at different times of year for those that have become untidy. This of course can stop or delay flowering depending when it's done.
If they are early summer flowering does that mean they flower on new wood? Growth produced in the current year? If you zoom in the flowers seem to be on new fleshy growth but I am not certain. I think the top one is lonicera japonica (yellow flowers) and the bottom is Lonicera periclymenum (pink flowers) from memory . But not sure. That’s why I am asking. Surely somebody can tell if they flower on old or new wood from the buds in the picture and the date it was taken??
Sorry, but I did say they flower on new stems not on old wood, and growth that is either in the current or previous year. Perhaps you should read the previous posts again.
There's some information below on both the Lonicera's you have.
