As you can see from these images, the tree has healthy looking branches, but the bark itself seems to be dying. It had some dead branches cut off last year, but I'd like to proactively help this tree get back to itself.

Zero experience here, and I don't know the type of tree this is. What steps can I take?

Thanks

The tree looks healthy except for the higher dead branches. The bark looks normal also. Small amounts of bark will fall of for the life of the tree as it grows. It's kind of like people shedding skin. The green stuff is algae/moss which is also normal. If you took close up pictures of the leaves someone here could tell you what the tree is.

Finally, something going right in my yard! I'll borrow a chainsaw and get rid of the remaining dead branches.
