There were about 10 to 12 tits, blue tits and great tits, on our bird table today, I think a number of them are relatively newly fledged, they eat like teenagers, they all move so fast it is impossible to count accurately. There were also three goldfinches, three woodpeckers, and a nuthatch, plus jackdaws and doves from time to time. I watched as I ate breakfast. The cat was fascinated too.

I was convinced we had a rodent getting to the feeders overnight as they were getting depleted so quick. Thankfully the trail cam confirms it is just the combination of early dawn and a parent woodpecker taking seeds back to its chick. A bit odd as we normally catch sight of woody during the day and would know why the feeder was going down quick, but it/they hadn't been spotted for days. Perhaps being a bit more cautious. This morning at breakfast we were treated to seeing the parent back and forward to the feeder and watched as it flew to the nearby oak a fed the chick!

Yes, I've also observed woodpeckers here frequently carry the bird seed to a place(nest) where it is eaten.

Forgot to mention the sparrows and starlings, house sparrow and hedge sparrow, and a lot of juvenile starlings with parents. Definitely fledgling bluetits, when I went to fill the seed container there was one sat on the table about eighteen inches away, quite unafraid and still a bit fluffy, young and stupid, then two more came to the fat ball feeder I had just filled the other side of the table, got a really good look at them, juveniles.

Not 'true' sparrows. Made me think of the story of the evacuee kid "Look Miss, there's a boid". "Not a 'boid' Johnny, a bird." "It choips like a boid". Tales of evacuee kids, really showing my age now. :)

Number one bird of the moment, this baby Robin (European) is so feisty with other adult Robins when they come for the mealworms I'm putting out for them.

Lots of bats here yet still more mosquitos. I watch them come out just before dark. They get pretty close to me often because im always outside in the evening finishing up the days work.

They seem to like my yard too.

We were talking about crows recently here. My highly anticipated prized garden corn is just maturing and the crows found it before I did.

Funny thing was I never saw one fly in, but day after day the damage was without question. Where did they come from?

So, this afternoon late I found a comfortable place to sit hidden close to the corn stalks and wait. In about one hour, a big old hungry crow came waddling awkwardly in on foot expecting to partake of some juicy ears.

I'm not sure who was surprised the most...that hungry crow or the stunned gardener. The crow bolted with thunderous wings and its look-out stationed several yards away in a tree erupted in terror also taking flight while screaming to the top of its voice.

Mystery solved. Few creatures, other than humans, are so crafty as to unnaturally walk so as not to be seen while posting a look-out for protection. Amazing creatures these crows indeed. 🤠
