Inspite of replenishment of nutrients in the garden over time through application of manure over time, soil in the garden needs some rest or a period of time to regenerate its biological components like earthworms as well as its biochemical and biophysical components. Legumes can be allowed to grow wildly in order to naturally replenish the soil. Right now, I have a garden which I have left fallow though its overgrown with grass.

This is a good idea, especially the part about planting legumes to replenish the nutrients in the soil. This can also be done by giving the soil a good natural fertilizer such as compost, and then letting it sit idle for a year or two. Good soil does need to rest from time to time, which is why it's important, if you grow your own food, to either have more than one plot of land, or to rotate the crops each time.
