The types I have seen would make enough of a barrier to stop them, I think even the deep rooted ones. If you left it unmaintained long enough dirt would accumulate on top, then you might get weeds.

There was this big anti-real grass pro artificial turf thing in San Antonio years back. A lot of people dashed out and installed this stuff on their property hoping to never use their lawn mower again. They didn't. They had to switch to their vacuum cleaners to keep dust, dirt and other debris away instead. And weed seeds sprouted just like in a real grass lawn. Needless to say there were some upset people. This stuff wasn't cheap to have installed especially when it didn't work. But, to your question. No, weeds will not grow "through" artificial grass

Same here when water became a real issue. Turns out fake grass gets hotter than real grass. When they use it for sports fields they have to mist it during games so the players don’t pass out from heat stress. Also appears to cause breast cancer issues for female soccer goalies. Not the other positions, just the goalies.

So, to answer the actual question you asked. MODERN artificial grass should block weed growth, and be quite maintenance free, but you might get a few - no different from weeds gowing in cracks in concrete, etc. However, spot treating them with a weed killer is not going to hurt the grass, is it? :)

Although artificial grass has a higher resistance to weeds than natural turf, it's still possible for weeds to grow around the edges or infrequently through small holes in the backing. Weeds can also grow through the infill, depending on the type of infill that has been used during the installation
