Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) usually grow best in bright indirect light or partial shade. They can take partial sun as long as they are not let to go too dry. More sunlight will encourage more growth, but will also require more water. If grown in the ground they will be able to develop a deeper root system that will allow them to receive more sunlight than in a container.
