According to RHS

Divide between spring and early summer, or in early autumn, after plants have finished flowering. Ensure there are a couple of growing points in each division. Avoid splitting plants too often as this will reduce flowering. Large clumps should only be split every four to six years.

Yes wait until the spring.
After flowering is ideal though if you can wait that long....gives you a chance to see the flowers next summer :)

Thank you for the information. I think I'm going to really like, and utilize this Web site a lot. I love working in the yard, but I'm not very familiar with a lot of the flowers, plants, and trees, and how to group things that I like together. So, thanks again.

But if you're desperate, you can tease one or two small ones near the edge of a big clump .. and then pot them up tightly .. They like it tight.
