Is this the kind of clematis to cut back this fall or let it be?

This is a "Jackmanii-type" Clematis. There are several similar cultivars, so I won't attempt to give it an exact name.

This type of Clematis is placed in Pruning Group 3, which recommends a hard pruning in late winter or early Spring. Pruning at that time is your safest bet, but you could prune in Fall, especially since your Winter is rather mild.

However, if you are trying to grow a very large vine, you may also prune in a way similar to Pruning Group 2. In that case, just give it a light shaping immediately after bloom. Of course, also remove any dead branches, which can be done at any time.

How far back is a "hard pruning"? I've had this clematis in the ground for 4 years and have never pruned it other than removing dead leaves. Do I just leave 3-4 inches like asparagus or more/less? I should say it has flowered every year except the first year.

I just looked on Youtube and saw what a "hard pruning" means. I will do that this October. Thank you for your help.
