Streptocarpus is a genus in the Gesneriad Family (Gesneriaceae) with over a hundred species native to tropical and southern Africa, with another 64 species native to Madagascar. Many species of Streptocarpus are popularly grown as conservatory or house plants, and also outdoors in mild-climate gardens. The plants often feature both beautiful flowers and ornately cut and textured foliage.
Many cultivated Streptocarpus are often known as Cape-primroses, but modern taxonomy also includes the African-violets (formerly Saintpaulia) within Streptocarpus subgenus Streptocarpella.
Former species of Streptocarpus native to Asia have now been placed in other genera.

Here is a beautiful Streptocarpus cultivar, Streptocarpus 'Blue Ice'. The genus name Streptocarpus comes from the Greek words streptos meaning twisted and karpos meaning fruit for the twisted capsule.
