Can you root scion wood?

I’ve ordered some scion wood online. It will arrive in late July. Rather than grafting it to an existing tree is it possible to root it? I’m thinking of dipping it in a rooting hormone and planting it in a pot.

This is to reproduce the scion wood so I can attempt as many grafts and I need to without needing to re-purchase scion wood if the graft fails.
